Buena Vista ("BV" if you live here) sits 25 minutes north of Salida directly underneath the Collegiate Peaks — the densest cluster of 14,000-foot mountains in the lower 48. It's a smaller, quieter cousin to Salida with one of the best in-town river parks in Colorado, immediate access to Cottonwood Pass and Independence Pass, and a food and brewery scene that's grown surprisingly serious in the last five years.
BV vs Salida — how to choose
BV is smaller and quieter than Salida, and views the Collegiate Peaks head-on. The downtown is two short blocks of historic brick — beautiful but limited. Salida has more restaurants, more nightlife, more depth.
If you're here for 14er climbing, fly fishing the upper Arkansas, or access to Cottonwood Pass and the Princeton-area hot springs, BV is the smarter base. For a longer trip, mix both — they're a short drive apart on US 285.
The BV River Park
BV's in-town stretch of the Arkansas has been engineered into one of the best whitewater parks in Colorado — surf waves, kayak features, beach access, and easy walking from the South Main neighborhood. In summer it's the social center of town.
