A Perfect Weekend in Salida — From a Local

This is the itinerary I send to friends. Two days, sequenced the way locals actually live them — arrive Friday at golden hour, hit the river Saturday morning, soak in the afternoon, brewery dinner downtown, sunrise on Tenderfoot Sunday, slow brunch, scenic drive home.

Friday: arrive, walk, drink

Aim to be in town by 5 pm. Drop bags, change shoes, and walk to F Street. Pick a brewery on Sackett (the riverside row has several side-by-side — let the patio decide). Stay for sunset — the Sangres turn pink across the river around 8:15 in July. Dinner on the patio. Walk home.

Saturday: river, soak, dinner

Half-day Browns Canyon rafting trip, morning departure (8 or 9 am). You'll be back in town by 1 with the afternoon free. Quick lunch at Howl, then drive 25 minutes south to Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. Soak until golden hour. Dinner back in Salida — book Currents or The Fritz for a real meal. After-dinner walk along the river.

Sunday: sunrise, brunch, scenic drive

Set an alarm for 30 minutes before sunrise. Walk to the Tenderfoot trailhead at the north end of F Street and hike up — 30 minutes to the summit and a 360-degree mountain panorama as the sun lights the Sangres. Brunch at Howl Mercantile when you come down. Then drive Monarch Pass west (gondola at the top in summer) or US 285 south through Poncha for the long way home.

Local insider tips

  • Friday before 5 to catch brewery golden hour.
  • Book Saturday morning rafting — afternoons risk storms.
  • Reserve Saturday dinner before you leave home.
  • Sunrise on Tenderfoot is the photo of the trip.

Frequently asked

Is one weekend enough for Salida?+

It's a solid taste — but if you can stay three nights, do. A longer trip lets you add a 14er hike, a fishing day, or a BV side trip.
