Fall Colors in Salida & the Collegiate Peaks

Peak aspen color in the valley runs roughly September 20 through October 5. Higher elevations turn first, valley floors last. The drives are the headline experience — Cottonwood Pass, Independence Pass, Aspen Ridge and the Monarch Pass corridor all deliver postcard-grade color when they're on.

The drives, ranked

Cottonwood Pass (BV to Taylor Park) is the easiest paved big-view drive — open until early November. Independence Pass (Twin Lakes to Aspen) is the most dramatic and closes earliest. Aspen Ridge (between Salida and BV) is the quiet local favorite — high, exposed, vast.

Local insider tips

  • Cottonwood Pass closes for winter early November — plan accordingly.
  • Sunrise and golden hour are when aspens glow.
  • Yellow first, then orange, then red — color rotates through the canyon over 2–3 weeks.
