Twenty-five minutes downstream of Salida on US 50, Cotopaxi marks the transition from the high-mountain Upper Arkansas to the warmer, drier, more dramatic Lower Ark. The river enters Bighorn Sheep Canyon here — a long, gentler stretch of Class II–III water that's perfect for families and inflatable kayaks. Twenty miles further east, the canyon plunges into the Royal Gorge.
What Cotopaxi is good for
Family rafting (Class II–III, hot and sunny, less intimidating than Browns Canyon), wildlife watching (bighorn sheep, river otters), and as the launching point for Royal Gorge full-day trips. The terrain is more desert than alpine — piñon, juniper, sandstone walls.
Local insider tips
