FIBArk Festival — America's Oldest Whitewater Festival

FIBArk — "First In Boating the Arkansas" — has run every June in downtown Salida for decades. It is the oldest whitewater festival in the United States and the social high-water mark of the Salida calendar. Four days, a dozen events, two music stages, and a downtown that doubles in population.

What actually happens

Kayak races, raft races, the legendary Hooligan Race (homemade craft, full-contact, run for the laughs), foot races (10K up Tenderfoot), live music on the riverside stage, beer gardens, parade, and a steady carnival energy along F Street all four days.

How to plan

Lodging fills the valley months in advance. Book by April for FIBArk weekend, no exceptions. Drive in early Friday and park once — downtown closes streets and parking is impossible after midday. Bring a chair for the riverside concerts.

Local insider tips

  • Book lodging by April or earlier.
  • Saturday is the headline day — Hooligan Race plus headline concert.
  • Walk or bike — driving in downtown is a nightmare.
  • Bring chairs, sunscreen, water bottles.
