Salida has quiet, quality climbing across three rock types within two hours: granite in Brown's Canyon, pocketed sandstone at Penitente Canyon south of town, and the famous limestone of Shelf Road near Cañon City. None of them are crowded the way Boulder or RMNP would be.
The three zones
Brown's Canyon granite (in-valley): single-pitch sport and trad routes on quality grey granite. Approach is short.
Penitente Canyon (1 hour south): pocketed sandstone bullet faces, mostly sport climbing in the 5.9–5.12 range. A nationally-known winter and shoulder-season destination.
Shelf Road (1.5 hours east): the limestone destination — hundreds of high-quality sport routes from beginner to elite. Best November–March.
Local insider tips
- →Penitente is the winter destination — south-facing and warm in February.
- →Shelf Road is at its best in shoulder seasons.
