Whitewater Rafting in Salida & Browns Canyon

The Arkansas River through Salida is consistently one of the most-rafted stretches of whitewater in America. The river offers a remarkable range: gentle scenic floats for grandparents and toddlers, technical Class III canyon trips for active families, and Class IV–V big water for serious paddlers. Every outfitter in town offers a similar menu — what really changes is which canyon you choose and what time of year you go.

The four classic runs

Browns Canyon (Class III) is the headline trip — a half-day through Browns Canyon National Monument with granite walls, named rapids (Zoom Flume, Seidels Suckhole, Hemorrhoid), and an unbeatable scenery-to-difficulty ratio. This is the right pick for a first rafting trip and for families with kids 7+.

The Numbers (Class IV+) is the technical big-water run upstream from BV — five named rapids in tight succession, demanding precision. Adults and strong teens only.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon (Class II–III) is the warmer, gentler downstream alternative — perfect for families with younger kids and inflatable kayaks.

The Royal Gorge (Class IV) is the dramatic full-day option — running the bottom of the 1,000-foot Royal Gorge canyon. Usually a high-water (May–June) only trip.

When to go

Snowmelt peaks the Arkansas in late May and early June. That's when the big-water runs (the Numbers, the Royal Gorge at high flow) are at their most demanding. By mid-July flows drop and the river becomes more forgiving — better for families and for first-timers. The commercial season runs roughly Memorial Day through mid-August, with shoulder availability into early September.

Mornings are best on summer days. Afternoon thunderstorms can develop quickly above the river and outfitters will sometimes cancel afternoon trips during storm cycles.

Booking and what to bring

Book directly with a Salida-based outfitter — guides know this water in detail and you'll generally get a better experience than from a multi-state booking site. Day trips include the boat, guide, PFD, helmet, and paddle. You bring swimwear, river shoes (no flip-flops), sunscreen, and a change of clothes for after.

Tip your guide. They work for tips and the good ones earn them. Cash on the boat ramp is standard.

Local insider tips

  • Book Saturday morning trips first — afternoons risk thunderstorm cancellation.

  • Wetsuits are included on cold-water early-season trips — don't skip them.
  • Drink water before, during, and after — dehydration at altitude is the #1 issue.

  • Tip 15–20% in cash on the boat ramp.

Frequently asked

Is Browns Canyon safe for beginners?+

Yes — Browns Canyon is Colorado's most popular Class III beginner-friendly run. Reputable outfitters take families with kids as young as 7 in normal flows.

When is the best month to raft the Arkansas?+

June for big water and excitement; July for warmer weather and more forgiving flows; August for the most family-friendly experience.

How much does rafting in Salida cost?+

Pricing varies by outfitter, trip length, and time of year — half-day Browns Canyon trips and full-day Royal Gorge trips sit at different tiers. Check directly with a Salida outfitter for current rates; weekends and peak summer run higher.

Do I need to know how to swim?+

Most outfitters require basic swimming ability. You'll be in a PFD the entire time, but the ability to keep your head above water if you go overboard matters.
